A Useful Dashcam Video Tool

Sorry for the radio silence last week. I was laser focused on finishing the testing and analysis for our upcoming paper, which bears the working title The Directed Cross-Ratio Method for Vehicle Speed Determination from Video.

It’s a shockingly accurate method that can be performed very quickly, and works with both stationary and dashcam video. A bit more can be found on that here.

While processing dashcam videos for the analysis, I came upon a gem of a freebie: Dashcam Viewer. Compatible with over 140 cameras, you can drag and drop a video in to get an organized view of any related telemetry.

Maybe more importantly, the program offers a clean and simple data-extraction tool allowing you to export in many formats, including CSV, GPX, KML, or GeoJSON. Prime for the more detailed analyses we often have to perform.

As an interesting note, I asked Claude to strip the same data and everything matched except for one key piece. Claude was able to pull the reported offset between the video and the telemetry, which Dashcam Viewer did not. YMMV, but it’s worth checking to see if your AI of choice can grab something Dashcam Viewer can’t.

Always more to explore, always more to learn!

P.S. We released vPrism version 1.0.24 yesterday. If you would like to see what it can do, please download a trial or book a demo here.
