Modern methods combined with our extensive database of Vision Point Clouds put Lightpoint in a unique position to do something that hasn’t been done before: build a scientifically robust database that accounts for air gap.

Calculated, Not Estimated
In 2024, Neal et al. published a detailed method for calculating stiffness coefficients that properly accounts for air gap.
Building on that work, and integrating approaches from the Strubles’ textbook and Neptune’s method for B₀ estimation, we developed a process that merges modern test data with analytical rigor. Here’s the short version of how we do it:
Measure free space and crush width from Vision Point Clouds
Analyze accelerometer data to determine speed/distance
Develop force-displacement curves via barrier load cell data
Calculate residual crush and compare to raw data
